Auf den Spuren der Habsburger

Document of November 1
Document of November 1, 996 with mention of the name «Ostarrîchi».

In a document dated 996 attesting to a gift by Emperor Otto III for the diocese of Freising, there is mention of holdings near Neuhofen on the Ybbs. They are in the region of the Marches and the Earldom of  Count Heinrich, son of Margrave Luitpold, thus belonging to the territory of the Babenbergs.  According to the document, the area is known in the local dialect as "Ostarrîchi."With this mention of the properties of Neuhofen in the imperial document, the traditional designation "Ostarrîchi"  is used in writing for the first time.  At the outset, the name indicates nothing more than a region lying on the east border of the kingdom of the Franks. No-one knows at this time that the concept will develop into the name of a modern state.
