The major political divisions
At the end of the 5th century we can distinguish between two major ethnic groups: the Alemannics in Alsace, along the Danube and in Swabia, and the Burgundians south of the gate to Burgundy in the Jura and the Rhone valley.Under the Merovingian kings and later under Charlemagne, all of these peoples are subject to a single power which is determined hereditarily. The last of the Carolingians to rule over the total empire of Charlemagne is Charles the Fat. He is deposed in 887 and dies on January 13, 888 in Swabia. Thus ends the political unity of Latin Christendom.
