Auf den Spuren der Habsburger

The early Hapsburgs

The origins of the Hapsburgs remain obscure. As a result there are a large number of founding legends and fabulous stories. We can first ascertain the presence of the Hapsburgs in the 10th century in Alsace. The donation of the two monasteries at Muri and Ottmarsheim in the 11th century shows that a rise to power led to a certain amount of wealth that permitted them the exterior signs of power and influence.Up to and including the 13th century, the Hapsburgs widen their influence on the Upper Rhine, gaining numerous fiefdoms and rights. An aid in this respect is the close relationship of trust with the Hohestaufen. Their holdings increase in the ensuing period and are written down in the "Habsburger Urbar," the register of the Hapsburg fiefdoms. Nevertheless, the Hapsburgs are never successful in creating a unified state from the different territories on the Upper Rhine.
