Auf den Spuren der Habsburger

The Babenbergs and the duchy of Austria

Jasomirgott
Idealized portrait of Heinrich (Jasomirgott), first duke of Austria starting in 1156.

Around 1150 there emerges in the Southeast of the empire a mighty territorial principality under the Babenbergs. Also belonging are the Duchy of Bavaria and the Marches of Austria. In 1156 Frederick I (Barbarossa) transfers this territory to the Guelfs as a fief. Heinrich II (Jasomirgott) of the Babenbergs is compensated for this loss: the Marches of Austria is raised to the level of the hereditary Duchy of Austria. Following this, Austria develops into a wide-reaching principality. Starting in 1230, the colors red-white-red becomes those of the national emblem under the so-called "binding shields."
